Prayer for America on this Independence Day










Dear God, Ruler of All Nations – we ask for Your Blessing during this 237th Anniversary of the United States’ Declaration of Independence.

Help us to be a compassionate nation – one that treats its citizens with dignity, that respects the self-evident truths that patriots penned :  “that all [women and] men  are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

 
God we ask that you inspire our vision to continue to build a nation that is truly free -- free from chains, free from greed, free from the hypocrisy of those who would use Your name to oppress.   We ask that You keep us from using blind patriotism to disregard the values that make this nation great:  love, freedom, democracy, individualism, equality, diversity, progress and change. 

Strengthen us Most High – make us a channel of Your peace.   Give us the will and fortitude to be an example of Your Will for this Nation and the World.  

And finally, Most High God, we pray that You grant our nation’s leaders wisdom.  Help the elected government and all those in positions of power and authority to govern wisely and for the common good of all. Guide them in legislating the laws of this land, that they create laws that are just and budgets that are moral;   that help this nation to a path of equity, peace and prosperity on Your terms. 

And as always, we praise you Most High
, and we thank you Jesus for your gifts of love, grace and leadership.

In Your name, we pray.  Amen.

Hunting the Homeless on Long Island

A couple of months ago, I participated in the daunting task of counting the un-sheltered homeless here on Long Island . Every year a coalition of service-providers work together to track people who do not have housing: folks who are living "on the streets," in the woods, under bridges & over-passes, abandoned buildings, or any other location where someone could stay without being accosted. What makes this task especially difficult is that the homeless on Long Island are seemingly invisible. Long Island is an automobile driven suburb that has a lacking public transportation system. In neighboring New York City , most of the residents depend on the subway and buses to get around -- and the homeless are clearly visible as they seek shelter in the bus terminals and subway stations. The Beatitudes

February 3, 2008 – Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time, Cycle A Zep 2:3, 3:12-13 Ps 146 1 Cor 26-31 Mt 5:1-12 According to the Gospel of Matthew, there were huge crowds listening to Jesus when he gave the Sermon on the Mount. But that hardly accounts for the millions and millions of people who have read the Beatitudes and are familiar with this famous Gospel reading – in some form or another. What I find most interesting about this scripture is that when Jesus was facing the crowds there is so much that he could have said and done during this sermon. Think about it: he had a captive audience. He could have very easily “wowed” us by pulling people from the crowds and healing them. He could have demanded that we worship and venerate him.
